Agility Schedule Posted Nov 2016

Tuesday, 11 October 2016 18:42

The next agility schedule has been posted!

Please note the following changes to agility registration:  we are opening agility classes for registration tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct 12 at 7pm. We are NOT doing a random draw lottery this session. Instead we will allow current students to register first. This means that all current students will get first choice of the classes they want.

Tomorrow at 7 pm you will receive an email with a password to allow you to log in to a private web page to register. This "members only" registration will be open to you for two weeks. Registration will be public at noon on Wednesday, Oct 26.

If you are a current student and have not received this information as a direct email, please contact us at info@woofsdogtraining.com so we can make sure you're on the list for tomorrow.

We hope you will find this process to be easier than the draw, and we anticipate that everyone will be able to register for the classes they want.

Registration open to current students:  Weds Oct 12 @ 7pm
Registration open for all students:  Weds Oct 26 @ 12pm

Winter Workshops Announced

Friday, 07 October 2016 10:41

Three new workshops have been announced for December. Dogs must have completed (or be currently enrolled in) Puppy Kindergarten or a Basic Obedience class at WOOFS! or a comparable positive reinforcement training center. All workshops will be held at our Ballston campus.

Saturday December 3rd & 10th, 11:45 am - 1:00 pm
Does your dogs come to you every time you call them, without fail? This two week intensive workshop will focus on teaching your dog a reliable recall, so that when you call him, he happily comes bounding over to you.
Workshop #1: Saturday December 3rd, 1:15 pm - 2:30 pm
Workshop #2: Saturday, December 17th, 11:45 am - 1:00 pm
Do you have an enthusiastic greeter? Are you afraid to allow your dog to meet people for fear that he might knock them over? Join us for this one day workshop to teach your dog to sit politely for greetings.
Saturday, December 10th & 17th, 1:15 pm - 2:30 pm
Does your dog pull you down the street on your walks? Or does he constantly stop and sit down? This workshop is a two-week intensive focus on teaching your dog to walk politely on a loose-leash at your side.

Free Workshops at Your Dog's Friend

Monday, 26 September 2016 07:36

WOOFS! owner Laura Sharkey and senior trainer Erica Pytlovany are scheduled for talks this fall at Your Dog's Friend in Rockville Maryland.  Come on out -- we'd see some of our familiar, friendly faces!

Your Dog's Friend

Teaching Tricks to Soothe the Savage Beast
Saturday, Oct 1, 1:30 – 3:30pm

Saturday, Oct 1, 1:30 – 3:30pm
Speaker: Erica Pytlovany, KPA CTP

We often put animal training into two categories: serious training (like down, stay and heel) and fun training (like agility and tricks). To our dogs, these are all the same thing! Learn how you can use ‘silly’ tricks to help with aggressive behavior, anxiety, or other behavior challenges.

Advocating for Your Dog with Family, Neighbors, Veterinarians, and Even Strangers
Saturday, Nov 5, 1:30 – 3:30pm
Speaker: Laura Sharkey, KPA CTP

If you have a sensitive dog (shy, fearful, reactive) or one with a specific training plan, you know how difficult it can be to communicate your dog's needs to other people in a way that they will respect. A stranger, saying that all dogs LOVE her, insists on approaching your shy dog. When your dog barks for attention, your spouse caves in and gives him treats, just to keep him quiet. Your neighbor lets her dog run to your because her off-leash dog is "friendly". Your vet rushes through your appointment without explaining your dog's medical condition. Or a friend insists that using a prong collar would solve all your problems. In this workshop, we will go over many different situations and provide you with ideas to help you be your dog's best advocate.

All workshops are free of charge but advance registration is required.  Your Dog's Friend is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose goal is to help keep dogs out of shelters by educating and supporting their humans. Register online at: http://yourdogsfriend.org/workshop-registration/

Pricing and Policy Changes

Thursday, 01 September 2016 07:08

Effective September 1st 2016, WOOFS! is transitioning from an open admission daycare to a much smaller, more exclusive service. Our screening standards will increase from high to downright picky in order to ensure that all your dog's playmates are the nicest of the nice - just like your dog.

Daycare policies will change as follows:

- Daycare rates will increase from a base rate of $36 to $38. The half day rate will increase from $25 to $27.

- Boarding rates will increase to $58 for crate boarding and $68 for suite boarding.

- Weekend daycare will no longer be available, although boarding dogs will still get plenty of play time.

- Daycare activities at the Shirlington Campus will end an hour earlier, at 6 pm, although you still have until 7 pm to pick up your dog with no late fee. Your dog will wait calmly for your arrival in a crate or suite, where we are happy to feed them dinner. This will eliminate the high levels of stress and arousal that accompany evening pick-ups.

- Dogs must have successfully attended daycare within the last six months to be considered for boarding.
